Current is a financial technology company, not a bank. The company does not use ChexSystems or pull your credit report, and they have a lot to offer.

American United Federal Credit Union

American United Federal has a second chance checking account called Fresh Start Checking. This account is intended for anyone who wants to improve their banking credit history with ChexSystems.

It comes with free online and mobile banking (including mobile remote deposit), free bill pay, free eStatements, and an end of the year reward dividend.

Members also get free access to over 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs. There is a $20 fee to open this account, as well as a $7.00 monthly fee. However, the monthly fee can be reduced to $4.00 if the account balance is $750.00 or more.

Bank of the West does use ChexSystems to screen new applications, but for people with negative entries on their ChexSystems report Bank of the West offers a second chance checking account.

It’s called Fresh Start and to be eligible for this account your entry must be older than one year and cannot be fraud related. The monthly fee is $10, but this fee can be waived if a few different ways. They are:

  • Have an account balance greater than $1,000
  • Have $250 or more directly deposited each month
  • Use your debit card at least 10 times or more each month

Bank of the West has locations in Sandy, Salt Lake City, Riverton, and Layton.

Cyprus Credit Union

Cyprus does use ChexSystems to screen new applications, but it also offers a second chance checking account to help people repair their credit history.

Called Fresh Start Checking, it requires a $25 opening deposit and has a monthly fee of $5. It comes with free online bill pay, online banking, a free Visa debit card, and unlimited check writing. After a year of keeping your account in a positive balance, Cyprus will allow you to transfer to a standard checking account.

They have locations in Salt Lake City and West Valley. To become a member you must live in Salt Lake City, be related to someone who is already a member, or work with a participating company. Membership is also available to any Utah resident who makes a one time $5 donation to the Community Recreation Association.

Desert Rivers Credit Union

Formerly Grand County, Desert Rivers doesn’t use ChexSystems or a credit report when screening new applications.

Membership is available to anyone in Grand County, San Juan County, and Green River City. Desert Rivers has locations in Moab, Blanding, Green River, and Monticello.

An account with Desert Rivers requires a $25 opening deposit, as well as a $25 minimum balance, but there is not a monthly service fee.

Account holders can access their account both online and through the mobile app. Online bill pay, eStatements, as well as automatic deposits are also available. Debit cards are available upon request.

Mountain West Bank

Mountain West Bank does not use ChexSystems, EWS, Telecheck, nor does it pull a credit report when reviewing applications.

To open a checking, you’ll need a minimum opening deposit of $50.
