While most banks use ChexSystems to review your banking history, there are some that don’t. Additionally, some banks offer second checking accounts.
Non-ChexSystems & Second Chance Banks in Utah
We’ve compiled a comprehensive list of Utah banks and credit unions that allow anyone to open a checking account, regardless of their banking history.
American United Federal has a second chance checking account called Fresh Start Checking. This account is intended for anyone who wants to improve their banking credit history with ChexSystems.
It comes with free online and mobile banking (including mobile remote deposit), free bill pay, free eStatements, and an end of the year reward dividend.
Members also get free access to over 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs. There is a $20 fee to open this account, as well as a $7.00 monthly fee. However, the monthly fee can be reduced to $4.00 if the account balance is $750.00 or more.
American United FCU has branch locations in West Jordan, Draper, Salt Lake City, Sandy, Kearns, Grantsville, Cabazon, and San Jacinto.
American United is also a part of the Co-Op Shared Branch Network. This means you get free access to your account at over 5,000 branches and 2,000 self-service locations across the United States.
Cyprus does use ChexSystems to screen new applications, but it also offers a second chance checking account to help people repair their credit history.
Called Fresh Start Checking, it requires a $25 opening deposit and has a monthly fee of $5. It comes with free online bill pay, online banking, a free Visa debit card, and unlimited check writing. After a year of keeping your account in a positive balance, Cyprus will allow you to transfer to a standard checking account.
They have locations in Salt Lake City and West Valley. To become a member you must live in Salt Lake City, be related to someone who is already a member, or work with a participating company. Membership is also available to any Utah resident who makes a one time $5 donation to the Community Recreation Association.
Formerly Grand County, Desert Rivers doesn’t use ChexSystems or a credit report when screening new applications.
Membership is available to anyone in Grand County, San Juan County, and Green River City. Desert Rivers has locations in Moab, Blanding, Green River, and Monticello.
An account with Desert Rivers requires a $25 opening deposit, as well as a $25 minimum balance, but there is not a monthly service fee.
Account holders can access their account both online and through the mobile app. Online bill pay, eStatements, as well as automatic deposits are also available. Debit cards are available upon request.
Mountain West Bank does not use ChexSystems, EWS, Telecheck, nor does it pull a credit report when reviewing applications.
To open a checking, you’ll need a minimum opening deposit of $50.
Mountain West Bank offers four types of checking accounts: Totally Free Checking, Easy Interest, 50+ Interest Checking, and Premier Interest Checking.

UNIFY Financial doesn’t use ChexSystems to screen new applications. They offer four different checking accounts: Free Checking, Right Start Checking, eChecking, and Premier Checking.
There’s a $25 minimum opening deposit. Each checking account comes with a free Visa Debit Card, free check writing, and free access to online and mobile banking.

1. Out-of-network ATM withdrawal fees may apply with Chime except at MoneyPass ATMs in a 7-Eleven, or any Allpoint or Visa Plus Alliance ATM.
2. Early access to direct deposit funds depends on the timing of the submission of the payment file from the payer. Chime generally make these funds available on the day the payment file is received, which may be up to 2 days earlier than the scheduled payment date.
7. To apply for Credit Builder, you must have received a single qualifying direct deposit of $200 or more to your Checking Account. The qualifying direct deposit must be from your employer, payroll provider, gig economy payer, or beneﬁts payer by Automated Clearing House (ACH) deposit OR Original Credit Transaction (OCT). Bank ACH transfers, Pay Anyone transfers, veriﬁcation or trial deposits from ﬁnancial institutions, peer to peer transfers from services such as PayPal, Cash App, or Venmo, mobile check deposits, cash loads or deposits, one-time direct deposits, such as tax refunds and other similar transactions, and any deposit to which Chime deems to not be a qualifying direct deposit are not qualifying direct deposits.
